Damascus steel is a very popular metal due to its wavy pattern forged in the steel. Damascus steel is made from two different steel alloys forged together. It is very beautiful and an excellent ring blank material. These blanks have not been acidly etched, so you can do that to your liking.

Rings are available in standard 8mm or thinner styles of 6mm and 4mm.

The channel on the 8 mm ring blanks is 1 mm deep and 4 mm wide.  Our 6 mm-wide rings have a channel that is 1 mm deep and 3 mm wide.  Our 4mm-wide rings’ channel is 1 mm deep and 1.9 mm wide.

Genuine damascus

This is in fact damascus steel, or more accurately, pattern welded steel. It's two types of stainless steel forge welded together, dissimilar enough for one to oxidize and etch faster than the other. What that means is if you polish the etched steel away, you will need an etchant to bring the pattern back. That's just how damascus works. Mine did the same thing when I was doing the final polishing steps as it's difficult to not polish the steel in the process. Simple fix, a q-tip soaked in ferric chloride brought the pattern back within seconds. If you can't get your hands on ferric chloride, you can potentially use a vinegar and lemon juice concentrate...it'll just take a bit longer to etch the steel. Whether you're using epoxy or CA, both are resistant to etchants, so it won't harm the inlay. Only leave the etchant on long enough for it to get the pattern visible again, then rinse in water and scrub with soap to be sure the etchant has been neutralized. Alternatively, maybe try coating the steel in nail polish so you don't inadvertently polish the etched steel, if you're careful you might not need to re-etch at all. If all of this sounds difficult, don't worry! Etching is super simple and anyone can do it, don't let that scare you away from it. The ring looks great even when you leave that outer surface mirror polished without etching, as the pattern will still be visible on the facet and sides of the ring if you didn't go overboard with the sanding and polishing...you just won't have as much of the pattern visible is all. As for comfort, the steel is only lightly etched, so you can barely even tell there's a difference other than texture. It's rather smooth and you can really only feel it with your fingernail, you definitely won't notice when wearing it. I would recommend this blank to anyone, even a first time ringmaker, as etching is just one more skill you'll learn along the way and you can always attempt it later on when you're more comfortable with it.

Etched not Damascus

This ring is etched NOT Damascus steel. My daughter ordered one. While working and sanding it, the etching sanded off.
Damascus steel is a mix of two different steels which after an acid bath, the pattern comes out AND runs thru the steel not the surface only. Daughter was highly disappointed with it especially after paying 40.00 plus dollars for it.

Hi Kenneth,
Thanks for buying our Damascus steel ring blank. They are real Damascus steel, and they come pre-etched. If you machine them and sand off the pattern, you can re-etch them as desired.
The current Damascus steel rods used to make the rings are twisted 316L stainless steel and 304 stainless steel. They have the unique and interesting texture and pattern for which Damascus steel is known. Contact our Support team if you need the mixture to use to etch your ring after sanding it.

Damascus ring blank

I think the ring blank is perfect in and of itself definitely for the more advanced folk (I'm most definitely not advanced) only thing I'm having trouble with is nuetralizing the etching acid

A nice Damascus blank

There is a learning curve to these rings, but they are pretty cool to make when figured out! I used ferric chloride to etch my first one. It may be a little too strong, but the etching is deep. (I wanted to try the matte look and it’s cool!) I used a size 8 with an 6mm width channel and it is pretty tight. So, true Damascus for all the reviews that are saying it isn’t. Next time I will try the muriatic and peroxide method. For those wondering, I don’t think you will get that dark black and steel look without a possible coffee treatment. Otherwise, these look pretty cool!

Beautiful... but

These blanks are absolutely stunning but I must be too new to the field as I wasn't aware that the surface would be textured. Rings are definitely pre-etched. Not really sure how to proceed with them.

Hi Diane,
Thank you for your feedback. The Damascus steel ring blanks are pre-etched, but you can sand the surface to get a smoother texture. If you take off more of the pattern than you intended, you can re-etch the ring and do it for a shorter time so the grooves aren't as deep.
Best,
Carolyn
